Flixology is a complex science – as such it is best to proceed with caution. The following summary is intended to share some of the basics for those who are new to the subject. An incorrect pairing will not only ruin a great movie watching experience, it could potentially cause extreme sadness and nausea. It is best to leave flixology to a trained professional.

 Yes, our attorneys told us to say that. So now that is out of the way, let's flixologize! 

Flixology is the combination of a fun movie with the most appropriate beverage. Such a pairing ENHANCES the viewing experience. Its really that simple.

Flixology requires that the flixologist identify key factors from the film to determine what should be consumed while watching. The following section will provide an overview of the concepts.

Once you get in the groove, you will have an innate ability, an intuition, a Spidey sense if you will, for flixology. It's the same with master sommeliers who can take a meal and pair it expertly with wine in seconds. Or like Ira and Barry in City Slickers who could pair ice cream with just about anything. 

That is totally not you right now, so read the following carefully and learn about some of the basics before making yourself look foolish. Here are some examples of things to look for when flixologizing:

Let us start with the easiest factor to assess when choosing pairing. If the drink is prominent or has an iconic role in the film, this is likely the first consideration and the easiest one to identify. If the lead character is constantly swilling a signature drink, this likely trumps all considerations.

EXAMPLE: James Bond movie = Dry Martini, shaken, not stirred, duh

This is also hard to ignore. If a movie has the EXACT SAME name of the movie, then it’s a no-brainer. 

EXAMPLE: Devil’s Backbone movie = Devil’s Backbone Beer

Some movies are so iconic that they inspire beverage makers to craft libations in honor of that film. 

EXAMPLE: Friday the 13th = Crystal Lake wines 

The more advanced flixology is more nuanced and considers more subtle factors. These factors are directly intended to illicit feelings or tastes in the viewer that will amplify the fun factor exponentially. Consider the following characteristics of the drink and movie when pairing your cinema and liquid accompaniment. 

Consider how the following might match the movie: 

• NAME
• COLOR
• TASTE
• AROMA
• TEMPERATURE
• LOCATION OF ORIGIN
• HISTORY
• INGREDIENTS

And likewise, the following in its pairing with the beverage:

• TITLE
• CHARACTER’S NAME
• ITEM
• SEASON
• ATMOSPHERE
• PACING
• FILMING LOCATION
• YEAR MADE
• HOLIDAY or other EVENT
